Why is the raising of young animals so crucial?
 Obtaining a well-developed heifer or milking cow isn't just a matter of breeding. Some people think that good breeders have been lucky with the genetics each time they produce a good animal, but in reality environmental factors play a much greater role. Research has shown that breeding is responsible for only 20% of a heifer or milk cow, with the remaining 80% being determined by the environment where the animal grew up. Alpuro Breeding milk replacers are composed of specially selected raw materials and contain all the necessary nutrients. Cow's milk by contrast often contains too much fat and is less easily digested by the calf.  This is because the modern cow has been bred for high productivity with high percentages of fat and protein. These ingredients, and fat in particular, are precisely those which the calf needs less of, and at the same time they inhibit the uptake of the desirable ingredients. Another disadvantage is that it is common practice for cow's milk containing penicillin to be supplied to calves. This is of course highly undesirable, since it may lead to the bacteria in the calf becoming immune to antibiotics. It also causes disturbance of the intestinal flora and increases the risk of transfer of disease, for example Para-TB.
