Definition
Escherichia coli, abbreviated as E-coli is a bacteria (Gram negative stick) that as normal, mostly innocent intestine inhabitant at all warm-blooded animals.
There are many types of E-coli bacteria which cause a number of diseases such as diarrhoea or a general infection (sepsis). A number of types of E-coli bacteria are able to produce toxins. These toxins provide serious to fatal course of the disease. This form occurs generally only in the first days of life (day 2 to day 7).
Cause
Colibacilose is caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli. There are several types of E-coli bacteria. The pathogenic E-coli bacteria can attach itself to the intestinal wall and/ or produce toxins.
Description
Calves sometimes get after 2 or 3 days water thin diarrhoea. The disease course is fast, animals dry out and die. This can sometimes move so fast, that a calf can drink moderately in the morning, and in the evening it is already dead. Both infectious (viral) as non-infectious (food) causes, may lead to a disruption in the balance of the intestinal flora, whereby overgrowth of E-coli bacteria a fermentation- or rotting diarrhoea occurs.
Treatment
Treatment is directed at the maintenance of fluid balance and restoration of the disturbed intestinal flora. Treatment with antibiotics is necessary. What kind of antibiotics should be used, you can best coordinate with your veterinarian. The treatment is described under diarrhoea: treatment.
