Skin disorders due to scabies

Scabies is a parasitic skin disorder caused by various scabies (see cause).

Definition

Scabies is a parasitic skin disorder caused by various scabies (see cause).

Cause

In cattle, several mange mites occur:
  • Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis (digger mite)
  • Psoroptes ovis
  • Chorioptes bovis (benign bite mite, benign tail scabies)

Description

The scabies Sarcoptes scabiei and Psoroptes ovis are skin diseases with severe itching, hair loss and crusting. The mites feed themselves with skin tissues and lymphatic fluid and cause severe skin irritation during the digging. Due to continuous unrest, reduced food intake and secondary bacterial infections, the calves remain behind in growth.
An infection occurs almost exclusively via direct contact, but since the mites can survive some days outside the host, indirect contamination is also possible. The scab-type Chorioptes bovis causes a less severe reaction than the two previously mentioned. Small scabs develop in the coat and the itching is less severe.
The diagnosis is made on the basis of a clinical picture and the detection of mites in a skin scrap.
The scab infection causes economic damage due to growth retardation and permanent damage to the skin.
However, animals that have had a mild form of scabies have been cured for a long time.

Treatment

A solution for this is a treatment with a pour-on method.
