Diarrhoea due to Salmonella Typhimurium

Salmonella typhimurium is an infectious bacterial disease that is attended with a high body temperature, intestinal inflammation and death.

Definition

Salmonella typhimurium is an infectious bacterial disease that is attended with a high body temperature, intestinal inflammation and death.  The vulnerable age is between the second and the sixth week, but can resurface during the whole rearing. The beginning stage of the disease is expressed by an increased body temperature (higher than 39,5°C) and lethargy. The intestinal inflammation that follows, creates a yellow, thing and smelly diarrhoea.  Soon after that the manure becomes grey green and slimy and it contains pieces of mucous membrane. In this last stage death occurs rapidly.

Cause

Salmonella typhimurium is a bacterium that belongs to the section of the Gram-negative rods and it belongs to the family of intestinal bacteria.

Description

The S. typhimurium infections are mostly detected in the first six weeks after birth at the farm. The calves infect themselves with salmonella bacteria via the mouth. There are a lot of factors that are important when the infection catches on: see diarrhoea. When it infects the intestine, there is created violent diarrhoea, which is thin and smelly yellow in the beginning, but soon grey green. Remarkable are the slimy bloody pieces (pseudo-membranes) in the stool. By the violent disease and dehydration, mortality can occur. The diagnosis can be done by manure research or section.

Treatment

Salmonella typhimurium is a bacterium that generally can be treated well with an appropriate antibiotic: ask your vegetarian. Given the severity of the clinical signs, it is recommended to use the highest allowed dose.
The maintenance of the moisture-/ electrolytes balance and the prevention of undercooling is often lifesaving. See diarrhoea: treatment.
