Navel inflammation calves
A navel inflammation is a bacterial inflammation of the navel.
Definition
A navel inflammation is a bacterial inflammation of the navel.Cause
Different kinds of bacteria can cause a navel inflammation.Description
Navel inflammation in calves (also called thickened navel) is caused by a bacterial infection of the navel cord usually during or just after birth. Navel sucking can also cause infection. The general symptoms that can be seen at a navel inflammation are:- curved back / raised belly
- listless / no appetite
- increased body temperature (39.5-40.0 ° C)
- acute: the navel is swollen, warm and painful possibly with pusher formation
- chronic: the navel is hard and thumb-thick. The calf is seemingly healthy but often lethargic
- navel abscess: this involves accumulation of pus. The navel abscess is a hard "ball" that can become a big fist.
Treatment
The treatment of inflammation depends on what stage the condition is.The acute inflammation can best be treated with a sufficiently long-lasting antibiotic treatment (e.g. Neopen, Ampi-/ Amoxycillin). Neglected (chronic) inflammation should also be treated with antibiotics. In addition, the navel should be rubbed daily with camphor ointment (black ointment). The navel abscess can be allowed to ripen by rubbing it daily with camphor ointment. When the abscess is mature, it can be opened.
