Respiratory disease due to diphtheria

Laryngeal diphtheria is a local appearing inflammation in the mucosa of the larynx caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Definition

Laryngeal diphtheria is a local appearing inflammation in the mucosa of the larynx caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Cause

Diphtheria is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Description

Diphtheria is a local appearing inflammation in the mucosa of the mouth or the pharynx. When the disease is near the pharynx, the calves become short of breath by the swelling and partial closure of the anterior air ways and make a snorting sound.

Treatment

Diphtheria in the mucosa can be stubborn. Because treatment with antibiotics should be maintained long enough, the preference is for a suitable antibiotic that can be dispensed through the milk. Provided of course on the condition that the calf drinks its milk completely. If that is a problem, there can be chosen for long-term injection cure (7 days).
If the calf is very stuffy, one can also try to reduce the swelling in the ignition area by dispensing an anti-inflammatory. In consultation with the veterinarian further opinions can be carried out.
