Definition 

IBR is an acute viral disease associated with increase in temperature, which affects in particular the front air ways. IBR is the abbreviation of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis.

Cause 

Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) is caused by a Herpesvirus.

Description

IBR virus, also called cow flu. Because the calves get antibodies with the colostrum, they are in the first period of their lives protected from IBR.
The incubation period (the period between penetration of the virus and visible disease symptoms) is 4 to 7 days. The visible disease symptoms can vary strongly from a mild to serious gradient.  Additional bacterial infections such as e.g. Pasteurella can cause a severe pneumonia. The symptoms that can be seen with IBR:

• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Nasal discharge
• Shed tears
• Red nasolabial plane
• Salivation
• Cough, sometimes snoring breath
• Brain phenomena can occur sporadically

The diagnosis IBR can be confirmed through laboratory research of blood and/or nasal discharge. 

Treatment

Treatment of IBR is not possible, but the additional infections can be contested. See respiratory disease: treatment.
