Description

Parakeratosis (zinc deficiency) is a disturbance in the cornification of the skin and is seen at:

  • Lack of zinc in the diet
  • Innate increased zinc requirement
  • Chronic non-specific inflammations of the skin

Due to increased production and reduced exfoliation a "dirty layer" is created on the skin. Furthermore, the skin is thickened, bald and scaly. It is possible that secondary bacterial infections occur.

Treatment

Providing of zinc. The scales can easily be removed by washing with a mild soap solution.
